Dr. Christopher MacLean joined FDi in February 2005 as our specialized biomechanical expert. Dr. MacLean completed a Ph.D. (Biomechanics) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst where his primary research interest was mechanism of orthopaedic injuries. This line of research evolved from earlier undergraduate (Acadia University) and graduate studies (University of British Columbia) in sports medicine.

Dr. MacLean's role with FDi is to work in collaboration with the Engineers to analyze, quantify and describe the human dynamics and mechanisms of injury involved in motor vehicle accidents (MVA), slips/trips and falls, and various other incidents involving injury. For example, in many MVA cases the Engineers will determine the dynamics of the accident and then, when requested, will forward their findings to the Biomechanist to answer questions based on the vehicle dynamics. Based on the Engineering analysis, clients typically want the Biomechanist to establish: 1) whether there is a mechanism available for the reported injuries; 2) what role restraint systems play (seatbelts and airbags); 3) the likelihood of the reported injury occurring; and/or 4) a quantification of occupant kinematics and kinetics.
